Advantages of pre school education before age five

Children proceed through different developmental stages. The stage from birth to 2 years of age, the psychologists call as the Sensory Motor Stage. During this stage the child attempts to understand the environment through his senses (by seeing, listening, tasting, spelling and touching). The pre school age, i.e. 3 years to 5 years is categorized as pre conceptual age where the child starts his development via physical, intellectual, emotional and social development.

Children start formal school after five years of age. But the time period before five years is also very crucial as the child must learn to start reading, writing and other language skills to perform at the formal school. The pre reading, pre writing, and other activities in the pre school will adjust the child to face the situations at the next step of his/her education.

From age 2, the child starts symbolic thinking. e.g.; language is a symbol. At this stage the child starts learning different ways of using and expressing language. They get attracted to choral singing, choral speech etc. Therefore the parents must provide an environment rich with such opportunities. But at home there are limited opportunities for choral singing or choral speech. This is due to lack of company of same age groups (peers) at home. Most nuclear families of today have only one or two siblings. However, the pre school provides opportunities to encourage language abilities by enhancing speech among same age students and by providing pre school trained teachers to let students imitate good speech models.

Children express egocentrism before age five. The main quality of egocentrism is thinking everything in the environment should be in accordance with his/her thinking. The pre school age child lacks in empathy. If the child does not get opportunities to play suitably to their age, listening to the stories and activities to build up sharing attitudes that are lacking due to egocentrism, the child will continue to live in an imaginary world, a beautiful fantasy world of gods and angels, Santa and reindeer and many other characters connected to the imaginative world. The child believes that the sun and moon are creations of god and everything happens to fulfill the child’s needs. Therefore, empathy should be instilled in the pre school child’s life, without direct disturbances to egocentrism.

Concept formation begins before five years of age, in a child’s development process. They have no reversible thinking. As an example, the child cannot understand why he/she should not pick flowers, since the next morning there are more on the tress. This concept formation is connected to irreversible thinking. The pre school child’s intellectual development is not strong enough to differentiate wrong from right. Hence the child should not be exposed to wrong methodology of child development strategies before reaching a suitable age. The pre school- trained teacher knows when to introduce, and what to introduce. In addition, the teacher knows how to implement suitable activities to children below five years of age to develop their abilities. Most importantly, these activities are group related tasks, collaborated with specially made apparatus and group work. These implementations should be done under supervision of a well trained person, or else there would be a strong likelihood for hindrances in the development process of the child. Therefore preschool education should be imparted before age five of human life.
