Disadvantages of home schooling

Imagine you hosting a 5 year old birthday party and your childs friends mothers inquire from you which school your son in going to attend, you can imagine the shock on their faces when you tell them that your son will be home schooled.

There are those critics who enlighten parents of the those home schooled children with the following disadvantages of home schooling-

1. The child’s socialization and interpersonal skills are not fulfilled. Children may tend to be introverts when associating with their peers. This may make them less responsive and unable to have a good relationship and therefore the child is subject to ridicule and bullying by their peers. The child may withdraw and will be reluctant to make friends.

2. Parents don’t have the flexibility to do what they want; they need to devote their time every day for 5-8 hours working with the child. This may be at times frustrating for the parents as they don’t have time to do other things, other children or maybe even focus on a hobby or interest.

3. Parents need to work together or sometimes alone mulling over the next days work schedule, This is often tedious for parents as they need to read, research and have a lot of insight into what they are teaching their child and be prepared with answers for all those questions that will be asked. Unlike in schools, teachers follow a set syllabus; home schooling is not that easy.

4. Over exposure to adult relationships in the home learning environment may make it difficult for the child to make friends with peers of his own age. The home schooled child will be viewed by his/her peers as too responsible and “un-cool” and lack that spontaneous behavior and free spirit of youth. Due to this the hone schooled child will be classed as a “geek” or a “nerd”.

5. Even though home schooling is free, there maybe costs involved with obtaining information, library memberships, printed matters and recreational centre memberships, which are all the tools used to home school your child. These facilities are usually free or can be obtained for a very nominal fee in schools.

6. Parents are sometimes unable to control their children in a home environment. This is seen in a typical toddler, who is striving for his own independence and may not listen to his parents but instead do what he wants. This could be a trying and stressful situation for the parent and teaching will not be easy.

7. Parents sometimes don’t have the capacity to teach even though they were school educated with degree, it’s sometime impossible to teach your child as you lack the experience and the insight. Sometimes no matter how much of research you do your feel you have just not covered everything you need to know to teach your child.

8. Lack of that competitive edge in the child. Home schooling does not give your child the self confidence and exposure to handle competition.

9. Lack of exposure to peers from multi cultures. It is important that children are exposed to peers coming from multi cultured environments, so that they are not racists and judgmental towards others.

10. The overall picture of home schooling in the mind of critics is that you keep your child at home on the pretense of home schooling as the school system is academically very competitive.
