Importance of graduate programs to make a career that can lead to a masters degree, a graduate diploma, a doctorate or professional qualifications.

Graduate programs

Graduate programs can be pursued by anyone who has earned a bachelor’s degree or has had adequate training in the field. These courses are offered by graduate schools, which may be part of universities that also have undergraduate departments. Graduate schools are usually not separate entities.

Graduate programs typically require extensive research and the writing and defense of a thesis (dissertation). Those enrolled in these programs are commonly known as ‘grad students’. Graduate programs result in graduate diplomas, master’s degrees, doctoral degrees and professional degrees.

The relevant faculty members may undertake undergraduate courses as well. Unlike at the undergraduate level, graduate students need to work very closely with their staff, especially when it comes to research. This relationship benefits both the faculty member and the student and together, they can come up with new findings or significant research results. Some graduate programs (especially master’s) can be based on coursework.

At the doctoral level, coursework may not be a part of the academic process. Priority is given to research-based learning. Also at this level, it is common to take a wide range of courses, to expand horizons and research skills.

Entrance to coursework based graduate programs is not difficult, relevant to research based programs. A good GPA at the undergraduate level, along with a satisfactory performance in the GRE will help your application to graduate school. When it comes to admission for a PhD program, a master’s degree with a solid research component is usually requested. Students with a baccalaureate honors degree may be admitted for a PhD program at the ‘probationary’ level, meaning that their work will be scrutinized in the first year. If they are successful, they will be admitted into the program. A PhD program takes a minimum of 2 years to complete. Students generally take around 3-4 years to get their degree; some may take longer. Science based research tends to take longer as sample collection and laboratory experiments take time.
