Home schooling around the world

Parents around the world are changing their attitude towards home schooling. They are aware of the impending dangers that the evolving school environment has on their children.

Home schooling is not only existent in United States of America and Canada but also around the world, it is catching on fast. However the downside to this is that most parents around the world are limited by local legislation to home school their children. However, these parents are not discouraged by the legal system and will do anything to change this legal ruling.

Australia, New Zealand and also countries in the Middle East, Europe, Africa and Asia have started home schooling their Children.

Australia
Australians mostly decided to home school their children due to geographic reasons, as the private and public schools are most often located in the towns and cities, which makes it difficult to travel to those who live in the country. Australians find home schooling their children both satisfying and enjoyable. Most states in Australia have legalized home schooling and parents are advised to inform the Education Department, if they are home schooling their children.. Australia has a wide variety of home schooling resources, such as books, libraries, council facilities, TAFE universities and even the Australian outback itself is a learning experience. Australia has three Home School Associations, the Home Education Association Inc (HEI), Alternative Education Resource Group (AERG) and the Home Education Network (HEN).

New Zealand
New Zealanders too prefer home schooling their children. New Zealand has a very flexible legal system on home schooling. However, parents need to inform the Ministry of Education and get an exemption to home school their child. Home schooling NZ, a Christian Charitable Trust is one of many institutions in New Zealand that offer a sound home school education.

Middle East
Home schooling is often very common in the Middle East countries, especially due to social and geographic reasons. The traditional Muslim’s belief is that a girl child does not need an education; it is only the boy child who is educated or sent to school. Most often in far off villages in the Middle East, families home school their sons. The rich societies will get tutors to their homes to educate their sons. Changes in society, tradition and culture have influenced the Middle East in recent times to facilitate education for girls, through public schools or home schooling. Home schooling is the preferred choice. Afghanistan is a country that was ruled by the Taliban, who banned education for females. However, even with the fighting or without the civil war parents are striving and struggling to give their children a decent education, in the form of home schooling as the school structure and buildings have been left in shambles.

Europe
Home schooling is yet to catch on in Europe. Parents are still trying to decide between the traditional schools and home schooling. Legally too there are restrictions on home schooling throughout Europe. Countries such as Finland and Denmark have a well organized home schooling system. Belgium, had a flexible school system where parents can home school their children, but in 2003, the Flemish parliament introduced a system where home schooling parents have to make a declaration that they will home school their children according to the curriculum. French parents are also turning to home schooling due to the education system. In Hungary home schooling is also practiced but is closely monitored by the state. European countries such as Ireland, Czech Republic, Romania, Poland, Switzerland, Ukraine and the UK, have adopted the home schooling system,

However, in Germany home schooling is illegal and families found home schooling their children are prosecuted and in the Netherlands, home schooling parents are fighting for their right to home school their children.

Africa and Asia
African countries such as South Africa, Kenya and Zimbabwe, home schooling is not an option as that is the only source of education in some parts of these countries. Majority of families in the rural parts of Africa, home school their children, while those well to do families send their children to boarding schools in far off places. Most often it is the missionaries that conduct home schooling for these African children as the parents of these families don’t even have basic education.

Asian countries such as China, Macau, Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, Hong Kong and Indonesia do not have home schooling parents at large. It is just a few parents in these countries that home school their children, as they lack the knowledge. However, in most South East Asian countries both parents are working and as such unable to home school their children and it is more convenient to send their children to public schools. The Chinese government is largely against home schooling.
