Plan your day. This way you will have more time around the home for other chores and time for yourself.
Divide up your teaching schedule. Have at least 2 to 3 hours in the morning and the rest in the evening.
Start the day with a subject your child is interested in and then he will look forward towards the rest of the day. Do not start with those difficult chapters on math, your child will be tired easily.
With toddlers have a different activity planned every half hour as toddlers lose interest every 15 minutes.
With toddler plan a lot of singing activities. Toddlers love music and singing, its best to include a lot of this in their day.
Incorporate a lot of fun learning activities for a toddler. Experiments, crafts and nature visits to the backyard are fun activities to introduce to a toddler.
With older children, prepare a lot of work that they can handle independently. Give them deadlines and let them take responsibility for their work.
Maintain a daily time table, this could be on a white board or a computer printout stuck to the refrigerator.
Maintain an achievement tracker on your computer so that at any given time you know how your child is doing academically. You can also evaluate your child at the end of the year. This is useful for older children to track their progress.
During the time you have allocated for teaching, do not have any distractions. Ask some else to answer the phone and take a message or have an answering machine take your calls.
If you have other smaller children or a new born, its best to ask some else to come in and home school your child, due to the stress of handling a smaller child or new born.
Dedicate each week to a particular subject/topic/theme of study so that you don’t have to prepare yourself everyday for a new subject.
Plan your child’s schedule every Friday night for the following week, this way you can always look for books and information which will be useful when you do your Saturday or Sunday morning Shopping.
Don’t over work your child or give lots of home work. Be tolerant and patient with your child’s work. He or she may not be brilliant but with a lot of understanding and praise can succeed.
Supervise your child if he or she in enrolled in an online course. It is easy to get distracted with all those pop-up menu’s and advertisements.
Let your child self learn. Do not apply pressure to your child to study, do home work etc. Let your child read or study without a set curriculum, some time your child will do better when he applies himself to learn instead of being taught by a parent all the time. This will help your child to develop his inner abilities and capabilities
Allocate time for outdoor activities and extra curricular activities. Try to fit in a normal schedule to your child’s day as much as possible with lots of outdoor activities. You can enroll your child at the local sports center or recreation club.
Don’t criticize your child’s work. After all you’re his or her teacher.
Teaching your own child is never easy, you have to stay focused and motivated.
Reward your child if you think he has done a great job with his lessons.
Always ask your child to re-cap at the end of the lesson what you have taught him or her. This can be done in your child’s notebook.
Allocate an hour a day for studying, this maybe useful for older students.
Have your partner/husband teach some of the subjects. You may not be able to cope with teaching all subjects.
Organize field trips and outings and include a lot places of interest. i. e. museum or nature reserve.
Educate yourself before you try to teach your child. Enroll or join a support group.
Don’t compete with the public school curriculum.
Don’t pressure your child to learn or master a certain subject. Let him take his time and learn. This is the best thing about home schooling.
Buy home schooling books at garage sales or on eBay, they don’t cost a lot. You can even buy good reading material and have your own library.
Set aside a separate room for studying and always keep your study material in the same room.
