When a parent decides to home school their child, they need to consider the various methods of home schooling. These are some of the most popular home schooling methods.
Charlotte Manson home schooling
Charlotte Manson’s method of schooling is teaching children through books, literature, nature, music, poetry and art. Parents are encouraged to read and let the children write this information in their own words. Charlotte Manson introduced living books as a method of learning for the curious minds of youngsters. These living books help children satisfy their curiosity and let them use their imagination and creativity while learning. These are not text books but are freely available at libraries, book stores and available at online stores. Most parents adopt the Charlotte Manson method of home schooling because there is no restrictions or limitations, which makes the child enthusiastic about learning.
Classical home schooling
The Classical method is called the Trivium. There are three parts to this method of home schooling: grammar (first years to elementary school), logic (middle school) and Rhetoric (high school). Grammar is taught as a foundation to understanding and speaking the language which is the first stepping stone into learning. Without the proper use of language, classical home schoolers cannot progress to the next stage in their learning. The child is first introduced to memorization of facts in this stage of the classical method. Logic is the stage where a child learns to reason, and the facts that were introduced at the grammar stage are now being justified by logical reasoning and the child is taught to understand, analyze, compare and contrast. Usually this is the stage where the child will start to ask a lot of questions and parents need to be well informed. The rhetoric stage children learn to express themselves through communication and expression through free thinking. The child is now ready for advanced learning.
Computer based home schooling
Computer based home schooling is a very popular method of home schooling especially among older children. They prefer to sit at the computer and learn through interactive programs, software, CD ROMs and online courses. This method of home schooling is systematic and structured; it is also very easy for the parent to work with the child, with minimum supervision. However, some online courses may tend to be expensive.
Eclectic home schooling
The Eclectic home schooling method is an integration of various methods. The parent may choose to select and adopt other teaching methods based on their child’s needs and learning capabilities. Parents sometimes find it hard to decide on which method of home schooling they should use as the child may lose interest in one method of learning. For example a child using the Charlotte Manson’s method home schooling may find that learning from living books maybe outdated and may prefer use the computer based home schooling method. Parents find this method very flexible.
Montessori home schooling The Montessori home school method was developed by Dr. Maria Montessori in the early 1900s. This is a method of home schooling where children can learn and grasp information at their own time and pace. This is an ideal home schooling method for a toddler and this method often integrates day to day activities in to a learning tool.
Relaxed home schooling
Parents use informal schedules and tools in this method of home schooling. Most often it is a day to day event that is a learning experience for this method of home schooling. For example shopping in the local supermarket with a toddler is a new learning experience, where the child can help his parent look for items on the grocery list etc.
Traditional Textbooks
Parents use traditional text books to home school their children, as some parents don’t want a diversion from the traditional class room learning curriculum. This method is a little rigid as it follows what is in the text book and may contradict certain data with latest available data. However, this is all up to the home schooling parent who can use the same curriculum with update data.
Unit Studies
Unit studies are when a parent decides to introduce a particular topic and cover all areas of the curriculum within that topic. For instance the parent might decide to teach the child the topic of insects. This topic can be covered by subjects such as science, geography, history, myth, art and general knowledge, for the next 3 months and thereafter teach the child another topic for another 3 months covering the relevant subject in the curriculum. Children who are home schooled using this method can specialize and broaden their learning experience on topics and subjects of interest and parent too can be better prepared and dedicate their research to one subject at a time.
Unschooling
Unschooling does not use any form of formal education or curriculum. This is a home schooling method that lets the child to learn what he or she wants. Unschooling students decide what they want to learn, when they want to learn and what tools they will use to learn. The parent’s role is to guide the child and act as an advisor providing all the required resources for the child to learn. |
