Home schooling and sports

Sport is one of the most important aspects in a child’s life, even if your child is physically handicapped or mentally affected. In home schooling there are no exceptions. Parents should involve their child in a range of sporting activities to maintain a balance in the child academically, physically and socially.

One problem parents face is to try and find a sports program that suits their children. Individual sports are not a problem but it’s the team sports, that parents have difficulty getting for their home schooled children unlike in a public school setting.

Parents can enroll themselves as well as their children in the local sports clubs, YWCA and YMCA for team sports.

Sport teams for home schooling children is steadily growing and home schooling parents are keen that their children participate in sports at a competitive level. By enrolling a child with local clubs, YWCA and the YMCA your child can participate in sport events and little league games on a very competitive level.

However there is a difference from children engaging in sports from a home schooling background and a public school background.Public school background children are more aggressive than competitive and lack the respect towards sports. There is always violence both in the sporting field and outside the sporting field. Public school children are less confident of themselves and will go to any length to get that sports scholarship to enter college.

Home schooling children on the other hand are less aggressive; they depend on their own ability to get what they want instead of cheating or using drugs to perform better. They have respect towards the sport. They portray teamwork and good sportsmanship.

Critics have condemned the home schooling parent for lack of sport and social activities in home schooled children. However, there is plenty of evidence that home schoolers who engage in sports, excel in it. A good example is Tim Teabow, who was home schooled throughout High School, now a college football player who recently won the Heismann Trophy – the highest honor in college sports.

Most home school support groups do have various sports programs. They organize sports meets, tournaments and matches in the areas on an annual and seasonal basis. They organize the home schoolers to play against the local public schools and visiting home school teams. They also arrange for the home schooling team to go to other locations and play against other home school teams. This gives the opportunity for children to travel and learn, like in the public school setting.

If your home schooler is a budding basket ball player, soccer player, baseball player or even a gymnast, they can get exposure outside the community and follow his/her dreams of being a professional sportsman or sportswoman and competing professionally.

There are colleges on the look out to award sports scholarships to children irrespective of whether they are home schooled or public schooled. Kids with talents and an aptitude for sports are often awarded the sports scholarships from the best colleges in the US. They identify those kids with talent for a certain sports and give them the opportunity to excel and become professionals; this is irrespective of the background.

Home schooled children have a well balanced educational s sporting opportunity, yes it is true, and they do position themselves properly to spend time with their studies as well as devote time to sports. It is a well balanced curriculum with older children. Unlike in the public school setting, if a child is gifted in sports these parents devote all their time and money on encouraging the child to excel in sports, with the best of coaches and trainers. The child’s education is forgotten and failing grades are ignored.

For younger children who are home schooled between the ages of 2 to 8 years there are plenty of non competitive sport events and activities. However, the little ones are more focused on meeting new friends and having fun.
