Our main objective after college is to get a good job and start making an income from the knowledge and the skills that we possess. So, how should the process of finding a job after college should be managed?
The job that you can apply would mainly depend on the educational qualifications that you have gained in school. If you possess a degree, then chances are that you would be able to go for a higher position in an organization than a person who has got a diploma.
First of all, you should take account of the qualifications that you gave gained from school. And then select the job that is most appropriate for the expertise that you possess. For example, there is no point of having an accounting degree and then accepting a job as a member of the company’s administration staff, who mostly deal with normal paper work. Doing this would be a waste of time and effort. And, if you wanted to end up as a normal employee of a company, then why did you put the effort in getting an accounting degree in the first place. Therefore, always find out whether the job that you are going to apply for would utilize the knowledge that you have. If not, simply avoid that particular job. Accepting would not really help you in developing your career.
Once you have decided on the type of job that you should be doing, check for the available jobs in your local area. Local news papers and magazines would have separate employment sections where you should be able to find vacancies. Buy those materials and then apply for all the jobs that you think as suitable for the areas of your expertise. At this point you will also be required to prepare a good CV to send along with your application. Use the internet or get the advice of people who are already in jobs when preparing a CV. A properly prepared CV would also be a good backing for you to get the job that you are applying for. The way you have prepared the CV will give the assessor the first impressions.
After you have sent your application, you will probably start receiving calls and letters for the interview. Prepare your self well for the interview. Ask your friends about the interviews that they have faced and prepare your self. The Internet will also be a good area to find information about ‘getting prepared for interviews’.
In general, I would like to point out several things before I finish this article. When deciding on a job, pay/salary should not be identified as your main concern. What is important is the working environment. Therefore, identify the organization that suits you the most and select that place. Chances are that sometimes you may have to start at a lower grade in a particular position or as even as a trainee. But always think of the plus side of it since it would give you the required knowledge and experience to work in the real environment. |
