Montessori Method of teaching is based on the concept that a child is their own teacher and given the correct environment, a child will develop to his/her fullest potential. This is the discovery made by legendary educationist Dr Maria Montessori, who was also the first female physician in Italy. Her conclusions were drawn through her observation of children and their behavior. She believed that a child who is taught by a teacher is put on a rigid schedule and will not enjoy studies as much as a child who is left on their own to make their own discoveries. Such children will enjoy and the knowledge they acquired by themselves, and this education will stay with them forever. Her teachings were that a tutor should not be the person to teach but to guide and give the correct material. Her parallels were drawn by the fact that an infant learns to talk and walk without help and therefore will teach themselves to read and write provided the proper environment and materials are available.
For this reason, the Montessori learning material plays a very important role in this method of teaching. Dr Montessori designed the material that would help children to learn on their own, as the material will show a child that it is incomplete if the task is not done properly. This way, a child does not find an adult unintentionally intimidating them by saying it’s incorrect. Neither does a child have to face competition with peers and nor does the child loose confidence. The material should conform to exact dimensions for the purpose it is created. To develop a particular skill, concept or exercise, there will be a specific activity. All materials are designed to work towards one goal. They are colorful and appealing to a child and is made of wood and glass and not plastic.
In a Montessori, one would find the learning material placed in easily accessible shelves for a child to go and pick what the child likes. These are arranged in an orderly manner according to subject areas. There is a method and a system in every area of a Montessori. A child will therefore learn to be methodical and orderly, while bursting with confidence.
Jugs, cups, and tongs etc are used in ‘Practical Life’ section which teaches them to grip a pencil and to start building concentration. `Sensorial’ section would consist of material to stimulate the senses. Phonetics are used to teach reading and writing skills.
Marketing of Montessori material is highly commercialized and parents need to be cautious when purchasing them as all materials available in the market may not actually conform to the standards or to the Montessori Method itself. And proper learning material is the focus of Montessori learning! |
