Montessori Method of education has had a great influence in the education system of the world. Annually, a large number of parents seek Montessori programs for their children. There are a vast number of Montessori schools all over the world, but the main concern should be to find an accredited Montessori that for your child follows its principles accurately. The word Montessori is not lawfully protected and can be used by anyone and there is tremendous amount of diversity despite the expectation that all Montessori's are the same. Thus the word Montessori has no bearing on quality anymore. This has therefore stained the name of the Montessori System. Some Montessori's will not deviate from the visions of their founder Dr Maria Montessori, while others have blended their programs with certain amount of flexibility.
There are different kinds of Montessori organizations who award certificate courses and you need to bear in mind that quality will depend upon the certification received by the teachers. You must not select an institution based on someone else's recommendation. You need to make your own investigations and the best way to do it is by listing several schools you have in mind and making appointments to be an observer in the school. If you do not know how to find a list of schools, the local telephone directory will be a good starting point. In this day and age, the internet is also a best tool to find Montessori schools in your area. Certain amount of information is available on the internet and sometimes even the ratings are listed. Parent reviews are available in most cases, and that too would be helpful for your decision.
Before enrolling your child in a Montessori, it is important for you to have an introduction to Montessori education. Thereafter it would be easier for you to observe the children in the Montessori you have in mind and see whether they are following the Montessori principles and whether the teachers and children are carrying out proper guidelines.
Montessori classrooms should be bright and inviting. Material should be easily accessible to a child. The child should be given opportunity to learn on their own, with no pressure on time, using various intersting and colorful learning material.
In a good school, you would find that the teachers are Montessori trained and certified. The teacher who is usually known as a director will not be teaching to groups but will be observing and giving individual attention to each child while keeping a record of his/her progress. Further you should be able to observe whether the material that is being used is in accordance with the Montessori concept. The children should be found working in an uninterrupted atmosphere. In some cases you will find that students are managing little groups, thus developing leadership qualities. Montessori children learn from hands on experience, investigation and research and therefore text books and work books should not be evident. You will find that the children will put away their material and clear the classrooms before closing up for the day.
To obtain admission to a good Montessori you may have to apply well in advance, as most good Montessori schools will have a waiting list and admission for all prospective candidates are therefore not guaranteed. |
