There are two types of lesson material in a PreSchool, large apparatus which are mostly found in the garden and small apparatus that are kept inside the School. These two types help the development of the child’s large muscles and small muscles. Mostly, materials from the environment are appropriate for the activities in the PreSchool.
When discussing large apparatus such as mat slides, swings, hanging tires and climbers, they assist in developing the physical and mental health of the child. In addition, he/she will get an idea about his/her surroundings and will build self confidence. The most important aspect a PreSchool child develops through play is socialization.
There are other activities such as enhancing language skills. Here the ‘Sound Boxes’ would help to develop listening ability. The ’PinkTower’ is useful to learn different sizes. There are other material which could be acquired easily from the immediate environment. Tumblers filled with different levels of water could be tapped with a pencil to make different sounds. The students would learn to produce rhythmic sounds through this.
Flash cards with different animal pictures could be shown to the child. He can imitate the sounds of the animals first. The second step is to name the items in the flash cards. Thirdly the child can develop a story through a series (not more than five) of flash cards.
For Pre reading activities, the butterfly and the flower apparatus can be used. This is a Flash Card with a size of 15 cm by 10 cm with a moveable butterfly on the left side and a static flower on the right side. The Child can drive the butterfly from left side to the right side - to the flower. This teaching aid is used to develop left to right orientation which is considered to be the basis of learning to read.
The sand pit is the most effective equipment to learn writing. The fine muscled of the finger is stimulated by the texture of sand. Also the child can write letters as many times as he prefers. This would develop finger dexterity and finger - hand - eye coordination of the child.
When teaching mathematical skills, pebbles, stones, leaves, pieces of wood, plastic beads, spoons, strings and many more waste material could be used for the purpose. As an example, the mathematical concept ‘Sorting’ could be done by using a junk box with different items with different shapes, sizes and colors.
It is very interesting to use paint made out of natural material such as leaves-green, red-flowers, purple-blue berries, blue-washing blue and brown-pan clay etc. The children would appreciate to draw pictures by means of their own paint products.
Finally, although there are many shelf materials available in the market, it is important to make use of waste material from nature. This would make the child to learn to live closer with nature and appreciate the natural environment. |
