Pre school programs

The PreSchool is a place to enhance the total development of children in the age group of 2 years to 5 years. The well trained PreSchool teachers should handle children carefully to avoid any hindrances in the environment from affecting their development. Therefore the teachers should pay attention to areas such as mathematical concepts, environmental studies, language development, manipulative skills, health habits and aesthetic development in the child.

The PreSchool as a whole should hold different programs as mentioned above. When presenting these programs to the child, it is important to follow a thematic approach.  The programs could be designed around one theme to present to the child. The topics should be very much appealing to children of this age. For example, selecting ‘Animals’ as a topic is more appropriate than a specific topic like ‘Mammals’.

The ‘Animals’ theme could be easily conducted throughout the course of the day and thus one program should be scheduled per day. When selecting the topics, the teacher should select areas which she should use during the time span of one day. The PreSchool child can pay attention to one aspect (e.g. language or math) only for a period of 20 minutes. Therefore the areas and the activities should be limited to 20 minute-periods. But if the children show more enthusiasm on one area, the teacher should be flexible about the time duration.

When concentrating on the theme ‘Animals’ for development of language the teacher should decide which aspect to handle for the day. e.g. reading/writing/listening/speech. If she uses speech aspect on the theme ‘Animals’ one day ; the next day it should be one of the other language skills, but under a different theme. Then the next subject could be introducing mathematical skills under the theme ‘Animals’ again. Other activities such as using the sand pit, singing, dancing, drawing, role play and playing outside closer to nature can also be included into the one day programs.

The schedule of the days’ program should not be too crowded with one type of work. As an example, although language development is important the programs should not include two language skills to be handled per day. In the same way, two mathematical concepts should not be introduced per day. Even aesthetic items such as songs and eurhythmic movements should be limited to one new item per week.

Finally, it can be highlighted that the programs of the preSchool activities should be based on daily programs, weekly programs, monthly programs and term events. In addition, there should be programs that should be included once a year such as concerts and health camps with the help of parents. Monthly programs could be designed as role plays, participating in religious or cultural activities at churches or temples, while weekly programs could be the introduction of new songs, dances, novel mathematical concepts, a new letter of the alphabet etc. Most important is to pay extra attention when designing the programs, especially remembering to keep the interests of the children in mind by always devising activities suitable for their age group.
