Child psychiatrists believe that children of 2 years to 5 yours should be looked after with special care. The reason for this could be because this period accelerates the child’s mental and physical growth. Thus their pre schooling experiences should be linked with the family. This is one part of the pre school education system. Through this link, the parents get an idea of their responsibility to educate the child in a manner where good physical and mental conditioning occurs.
The elders of olden families used to educate their little ones at home. This type of learning is called ‘Learning at mother’s feet’, and in modern times this has changed to pre-school education. The self confidence of the child should be increased during the first five years of the life and pre-school education provides better opportunity for this.
The age of two is very important to develop bones and muscles of the child. Therefore the child starts to climb, jump run and throw things. The development of the brain and the nervous system increase the child’s intellectual abilities, especially in language development and comprehension. The above psycho-motor abilities should be developed through proper guidance and apparatus appropriate to the age. The preschool provides both the above mentioned necessities for a two year old child.
As a result of physical and mental growth the child practices many motor activities. They start cutting, pasting, drawing and doing various other coordinated tasks. The finger dexterity starts at the age group of two to six years. Adults should supply the necessary environment to encourage these finer motor skills, by providing opportunity for suitable activities. The trained pre school teacher knows at which stage to expose them to such activities.
The age of two years to four years is also very important as this is when the children are in the pre-conceptual stage. In this stage, special features could be observed such as understanding the permanent nature and special features of his environment, co-ordination of sensory and motor activities, understanding language and trying to speak with adults, and the most important of all, social and personality development of the child.
Further enhancements of the development process occurs during this age in the pre school aged child, which should be encouraged by adults, peers, teachers and relatives, by building the child’s self confidence. This could be done by praising, through conversation, assigning work suitable for the age, and refraining from insulting and rejecting the child.
The pre school age is very important to enhance mental and physical growth through interaction with the environment. Socialization is very significant for building personality, as well as for other advances, during this age group. The child also learns how to associate and live with people other than their immediate family.
The pre school aged child (Age group 2 to 5 years) grows rapidly in weight, height cranial circumference and dentition, as part of their physical growth process. And the mental growth during this age involves controlling emotions, adjusting according to the situation, sharing, communicating with others and learning the circumstances of a situation. The surroundings greatly effect the above mentioned growth types in age two to five year old children. Thus proper development during this rapid growth phase can be greatly benefited through pre school education, along with good care and love from home. |
