A child is not a miniature adult, but a developing person. Every parent’s or adult’s dream is to bring up a health and intelligent child to the society. Pre school education contributes a lot to fulfill this need. The contemporary child does not get enough freedom to move about, as the children who lived in olden days. The houses are congested, gardens are small, extended families have become nuclear families, and the whole family glues their eyes to the television. The child of pre school age lacks company at home, as social changes due to economy and the expanding population results in the pre school child being isolated among his/her own people. The task of developing a happy and complete child is thus taken on by the pre school education system in today’s society. The success of this system is it provides child centered education.
The beginning of child centered education has a long history, dating all the way back to the philosopher Plato’s era. He is the first person who showed that the first five years of life is the most important in human life. Other philosophers and educationists all over the globe have confirmed this idea. The methodology in child centered education is the use of different play techniques to attract the child to the learning process. Learning is not always through books, but mostly through experience and environmental interaction. There are three types of activities in the play way method in pre school learning. First type is physical activities to develop motor skills, second is interaction with others (especially with peers to develop social abilities) and third is cognitive development through personal activities.
The pre school child of 2 ½ years to 5 years of age develops psychomotor (activities connected to the body and nervous system) abilities. The pre school provides a suitable arena for this purpose. If the child is at a place where he can derive social interaction as well as physical exercises suitable for his age and personality development through various activities, he will reach the expected developmental level. The curiosity level of a child rises during the ages of 3, 4 and 5 years. This curiosity tempts the child to ask questions and they expect answers from adults around them. The trained pre school teacher can provide necessary activities to fulfill a child’s curiosity without disturbing or obstructing his flow of thoughts. But this fulfillment would not be sufficiently received from their home environment. Children are too busy to always pay attention to the child and give them the required attention. If the child is at a separate place where he is treated as important and knowledgeable, by teachers and peers, his cognitive and other developmental levels will improve rapidly.
At a pre school the child will learn to respect others ideas, play with peers and share small items which he thinks very valuable (bits of paper, food, chalk etc.). Other than that he learns to exchange ideas and absorb information from around him. This will help enhance his memory power, which will be useful throughout his lifespan. |
