Pre school learning; discover the fFun side of learning

The Pre School Child undergoes an on-going process of development of the total mind and body. The child needs many activities to support such development. If he gets many opportunities to play using both large muscles and fine muscles in his body, it would ensure the fulfillment of one aspect of his bodily development. Due to this fulfillment, the child will be emotionally satisfied and keep his experiences in his long term memory which holds good recalling power. This recollection would help him to apply the experiences in new situations, learn more and store these experiences in his memory. Therefore learning through fun games (activities) would be a great help for his future learning process.

When considering ‘Child Art’, it would give the child a strong confidence when he produces his completed drawings to the teacher. The paint for the drawings could be in any medium, such as water colors, pastel or natural paints from leaves, flowers etc. The preschooler can participate in making paint out of natural things. All the novel activities are fun to the children in the Pre School. The material for drawing could also be wall covered with large papers for more appeal and the paint brush could be fingers, feet, palms, tooth brushes, and many other objects which can produce pictures.

Music is the most valuable fun creating subject at Pre School. Activities such as singing in groups, acting while singing, question and answer songs, singing while clapping and tapping, eurhythmic movements, dancing to a tune and drama with music make children enthusiastic for learning. Music is very important to develop a child’s emotions, social reactions and personality building. Although the child cannot understand these aspects of development, he attracts music and activities connected to music for fun. These direct fun activities are very important in a child’s life.

The subject of handwork is mainly based on creating pleasurable work time for the child. From starting to the end, the child enjoys the steps of making different creations. The Preschoolers must work in groups to gain different aspects on expansion of their knowledge.

When considering other subjects such as language and mathematical concepts development, the teacher can introduce them too in play activity mode. If the child can learn any lesson through play it will remain in his long term memory as he learns it with enthusiasm. The elaborations in any activity can draw a child’s attention in full for that task. When learning to read, the teacher can utilize different apparatus such as picture cards to build up stories, animal pictures to imitate sounds, butterfly to the flower movable picture motifs to enhance left to right orientation, etc. In the same aspect, to enhance writing skills, activities such as working with sand, clay etc. could be introduced. Mathematical concepts could be developed by means of different games such as number games. e.g. To indicate number three to clap three times, sorting different objects to boxes while counting etc.

Finally it can be concluded that a preschooler will learn just about any subject, even religion much more enthusiastically through interesting stories and fun activities and games. This method is called ‘child oriented’ teaching. The teacher should be a creative and pleasant person to work with children to help derive fun out of any Pre School activity.
