How to keep track of your child's education

You need to have a plan on how to keep track of your child's education instead of sifting through heavy paper work when you need to find something. You need to keep your home school organized.

You may find keeping records useful when you need to evaluate your child's performance, achievements and progress or re-enter school at any point in time.

There is various home schooling record keeping methods. You can choose the best method to keep your home schooling records organized and manageable.

There are various online planners to record your child's progress. Online systems are a little more complicated than the traditional methods of maintaining records. There are advantages though, as you can access your records anywhere and anytime, even if you are on vacation. You can also refer to past records faster than you normally would. You can purchase software to organize your assignments. You can then update your records once a week or once a day and maintain a schedule to update your records and then stick to it.

There are disadvantages to the online system, as you need to first set up your information and get it right, you may face problems with security as well as computer failure, and need to maintain backups so that you don't loose data even if the computer crashes.

However, if you prefer the traditional method of filing and writing reports, you can adopt this too. This is a cost effective and cheap method of keeping track of your child's home schooling education. If you are going to follow the paper method, here are a few useful tips to help organize your child's home schooling education.

First plan your calendar either monthly or weekly in advance.

Open a file or folder. This could be for each school year as you don't want too many files in your storage cupboards. Separate them by each subject and year. This is also useful to file your worksheets.

Have a set of objectives for each month for your child. This would give a lot of motivation and help your child motivate himself to accomplish these objectives.

At the end of each month check your child's accomplishments and whether he or she has achieved the objectives.

Have all stationery ready at hand.

Create a separate section for all field trips and what your child accomplished that day. If your child is old enough to write, ask him to write in his own words what he accomplished.

Have a brief plan on what you want to achieve during the school year and work towards it with your child.

Each year you can have a separate set of subjects and advanced objectives.

Even if you don't have a set of objectives for the month and prefer the free style of learning, you can still maintain a folder with your child's accomplishments for each month.

You can issue a monthly report card so as to keep your child motivated and show him that he is really doing well.

Set an hour each day to complete and put your child's paperwork in order. This is a good time to review what your child has done for the day.

If you like to have a keep sake of your child's accomplishments you can maintain a journal and fill out your child's accomplishments each day. You can later review your observations.

Children attending public schools have a similar concept to track each child's progress. There are parent teacher meetings to discuss the child's progress and failures and how to overcome such failure. There are also monthly report cards and progress charts.
