Mother, Finding a Letter

Today my mother, while she was dusting my table and drawers, came across an envelope which contained my letters to my friend Mary. She was with me in college, till last March, and we were quite close. Mummy suspected that this type of correspondence with a girl would definitely defeat my purpose in life.

I had to explain to my brother, the whole of the background as follow: "Mummy, never doubt yoyr son. He is fully conscious and cautious. He is not going to bring bad name to the family. But side by side Mummy, you all should also allow me my right to write to my fast friends, once in a blue moon."

I told that the letter was the first one, which I had written after leaving college, a couple of months back and that too was in reply to some of her enquiries, made in one of her letters, to a common friend.

I showed my letter to my mother, who was then convinced and left the matter at that stage. Later on, the girl came to our house, in my absence, and my mother was so pleased with my choice of a friend, that she herself started enquiring about her family and the background, as perhaps, in the heart of her hearts, she had approved of her, as she would be daughter-in-law.
