Fun Learning: Pre school learning through music

There is a close relationship between music and PreSchool learning. There are many aspects connected with music at PreSchool; such as listening, eurhythmic movements, dancing, language development and also partial development of mathematical concepts.

Music should be a main subject in the pre school time table. This is a good method of controlling children and also, for making a friendly and happy environment in the school. If anyone questions a pre school child 'why do you want to go to school? He might say that he can sing and dance there. The children of pre school age are ego-centric. Therefore conflicts would be common among them. Using aesthetic facets such as music could minimize such situations.

The songs should be full of repetitions and should not contain very high notes or low notes. The tempo should not be too fast or too slow. If the tempo is too fast the child would be in tension since he cannot move his body briskly. If the tempo is too low he would get board. Therefore the moderate speed in songs is appealing for the pre school age.

When concentrating on language teaching the child can learn the alphabet through a song with music. The learning containing rhythm will lodge in the memory of the child easily. Listening is the skill which benefits the most through music. Musical chairs is the most common game in pre schools known to impart listening skills. In addition, passing the bean bag or activity bag are very enthusiastic activities in this age. When considering the 'Activity Bag'; there should be more than five children in the circle. When the teacher plays the music they start passing the bag which contains different commands, such as 'sing a song' or 'walk like a duck'. When the music is stopped the child holding the bag must take one paper out and hand over to the teacher. The teacher will read it for all the children since they cannot read well at this stage. This activity contributes many positive points for the development of the pre school child. While learning to listen attentively, the child also leans to socialize through acting or obeying commands in front of the other students. This is very important for very shy and introverted children to overcome their timidity.

When considering the aspects of mathematical concepts, the teacher can use music for counting. For instance, she can play the same cord for three times and ask how many times they heard the music. Using music for eurhythmic movements could involve teaching the child flexible body movements suitable for future learning such as ballet, gymnastics and swimming.

Finally, it can be concluded that the pre school teachers cannot impart knowledge in most areas without music. Story telling, moral development, dancing, language development and mathematical concept development could be done utilizing music appropriate to the pre school age, which would undoubtedly make the task more lively and entertaining. This would make child learn enthusiastically at the PreSchool.>
