These children are making real Hot Cross Buns. Of course they do not go to the oven-Mother will do that. She will also stress the importance of hand washing.
Recipe for Hot Cross Buns (approximately twelve)

1 lb. flour
Pinch of salt
¾ oz. yeast
2 oz. margarine
2 tablespoons caster sugar
2 oz. currants
1 level teaspoonful powdered cinnamon
1 egg 1 level teaspoonful mixed spice
About ½ pint milk

Here is what your child can do with your guidance.

Sieve flour with salt and spices, rub in fat and add prepared currants. Cream the yeast with a little of the sugar, add a little warm milk and pour into centre of flour, sprinkle lightly over with flour and leave for ten minutes. Mix to a stiff dough with beaten egg, adding a little milk if required. Cover with a clean cloth, stand in a warm place until the mixture rises and doubles in size. Divide into portions, mould into small buns, mark with a cross, and leave on a greased and floured tin. Allow to rise until half as large again. Bake in a hot oven five to eight minutes. Melt a little sugar in one tablespoonful of milk, and brush over the buns.
