Most public libraries have a section for the under-fives, displaying a wide variety of colorful picture-books and appealing story books very suitable for reading aloud to this age group.
Joining the libraryWhen joining a library, the young child is introduced to a wider range of books than would otherwise be possible, particularly if parents cannot easily afford books. School at five may be much too late for an effective introduction to books. A good impression is also made on a child who sees the interest and concern with books shown not only by adults but by other children in the library. The Public Library is a happy and interesting introduction to community-provided services (of which primary school will later be a part) Some libraries have story-telling sessions for young children. Enquire at your local library about this.

Taking care of books which are not his own will also help a developing sense of responsibility towards articles and people, and being a member of a library, with his own ticket, will add to his developing sense of social importance.
