Paste and paper

A child can find many uses for an out-of-date wallpaper pattern book. He or she is fascinated by the many colors and color combinations and is also intrigued by the patterns.

By the age of four, children begin to appreciate how line and color can be controlled, and the pleasing effect of pattern-making.

They will identify the repetition of colors and patterns, cut them out make up their own spectacular shapes and pictures. Sticking with paste is never easy for children, but they are willing to learn the technique. Show them how to wipe off surplus paste on the edge of the container, and how to hold down the paper while they paste it. They are anxious to learn because they are becoming more ambitious, anxious to show you and each other that they can compete. A little discreet help may eventually spark off a great deal of individual enterprise.

The line of standing figures is made by folding paper concertina-wise, drawing and cutting so that parts of the folds are left intact, and then opening out. Try other figures and shapes.
