Play with a purpose
These children are getting a very real sense of importance and satisfaction fro their play they are actually practicing road drill, and developing their alertness and judgment as well as their physical control over whatever they are riding or pushing.
They are using the traffic lights and beacons which they have made themselves from junk material. They probably had the help of an adult in laying out and chalking the ‘roads’ and placing the sings, but this will in no way detract from their pleasure.
Children nearing school age rely a great deal on the interest and encouragement which adults can give when helping to find the materials they need for their imaginative play.
