The Three Brothers
The whole of a certain little valley belonged to three brothers called Schwartz, Hans and Gluck. The two elder brothers were very ugly men. They lived by farming the Treasure Valley. They killed everything that did not pay for what it ate. They shot the blackbirds because they pecked the fruit. They killed the hedgehogs in case they worried the cows in the fields. They poisoned the crickets for eating the crumbs in the kitchen. They made the servants work for no wages until they would not work any more, and then they turned them out of door without paying them. They were so mean and cruel that all who knew them gave them the nickname of the “Black Brothers”.
The youngest brother, Gluck, was very different from the others. He was twelve years old, fair, blue-eyed, and kind to everything that was living.
